One of the most common questions among foreign nationals living in Latvia is whether a residence permit must be renewed and how the process works in practice. First of all, it is important to understand that a Latvian Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) may be issued for different periods depending on the legal basis for the application, the applicant's nationality, and other circumstances of the case.
For example, for citizens of certain countries, the first residence permit may be issued for only one year, while employment-based residence permits may, in some cases, be granted for up to five years from the outset. The European Union Blue Card is typically issued for a period of up to two years. What Is the Annual Registration of a Residence Permit?
If a residence permit has been issued for a period exceeding one year, this does not mean that no further action is required until the permit expires. In many cases, foreign nationals are required to complete an annual registration procedure. Essentially, this process serves as confirmation that the grounds for residing in Latvia remain valid and that the conditions under which the residence permit was granted have not changed. During the registration process, the applicant is usually required to submit an application and provide information or documentation confirming that the legal basis for residence in Latvia continues to exist.
Does Latvia Have a Residence Permit Renewal Procedure?
From a legal perspective, the term "renewal" is somewhat simplified. When the validity period of an existing residence permit is approaching its end, the foreign national effectively undergoes the process of obtaining a new residence permit again. According to Latvian immigration regulations, the application must be submitted no later than 45 days before the expiration date of the current residence permit. The procedure generally starts almost from the beginning:
a new invitation or confirmation of the legal basis may need to be obtained, where applicable;
a new set of supporting documents must be prepared;
the application is submitted for review;
the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs (OCMA) reassesses whether the applicant meets the requirements established by law;
a new decision is issued either granting or refusing the residence permit.
Which Documents Must Be Submitted Again?
Many foreign nationals mistakenly assume that only a new application form is required when applying again. In practice, this is not the case. Each application submitted after the expiration of a residence permit is treated as a separate immigration case. As a result, the applicant must once again provide documentation confirming the legal basis for residence, sufficient financial means, accommodation arrangements, and any other requirements established by law for the relevant category of residence permit. For this reason, it is strongly recommended to begin preparing for the new application well in advance. Early preparation helps ensure that all required documents can be collected on time and reduces the risk of losing the right to reside in Latvia due to delays or incomplete documentation.

Do not wait until the last moment to begin preparing your application. Many supporting documents may need to be obtained from foreign authorities, translated, legalized, or apostilled. Depending on the country of origin, this process can take several weeks or even months.
